Body shape guides get a bad reputation for feeling reductive, as if five categories could sum up something as personal as your body. But used the right way, they’re not about hiding anything. They’re about understanding proportion, so you can pick cuts that actually work with your frame instead of fighting it. Here’s how to dress for balance, whatever shape you’re working with.

Sister Says

Okay so here’s the thing about dressing for your shape, it’s honestly not that deep once you stop overthinking it. If you’re a pear, you just want a bit more attention up top, boat necks, off-shoulder tops, and structured blazers are your friends, and straighter trousers or an A-line skirt will let your bottom half breathe instead of clinging. Apples are kind of the opposite story, you want the waist to feel defined without anything actually sitting tight there, so V-necks, empire waistlines, and wrap dresses genuinely do most of the work here. If you’re an hourglass, honestly, you’ve kind of already won this one, just don’t hide that waist, wrap dresses and belted coats will always have your back.

Rectangles get to have a little fun creating curves that aren’t naturally there, think peplum, a good belt, or pairing a fitted top with a fuller skirt to break up the straight lines. And if you’re an inverted triangle, it’s really just about balancing out broader shoulders with a little more volume below, wide-leg trousers or a pleated skirt do the trick nicely. But honestly, none of this is gospel. Most of us aren’t textbook shapes anyway, and half of getting dressed well is just wearing what makes you feel good, category be damned.

TL;DR

Dressing by silhouette comes down to understanding proportion and choosing cuts that work with your body instead of against it. Pears benefit from volume on top, apples from waist definition through neckline and cut, hourglasses from anything that highlights the waist, rectangles from added curve through peplum or belts, and inverted triangles from balancing broader shoulders with fuller bottoms. None of it is about hiding your shape, just knowing how to work with it.
