Fur just quietly exited the group chat, and honestly, nobody at New York Fashion Week seems to be mourning it. Starting this September, the runway went fully fur free for the first time ever, and instead of feeling like a loss, it felt like fashion finally getting its act together. Ralph Lauren kicked off the week proving the point himself, no fur in sight, and the show still had Viola Davis and Ariana DeBose in the front row acting like nothing was missing.
New York was honestly a little late to this party. Cities like London, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Melbourne ditched fur years ago, so this feels less like a bold new stance and more like NYFW finally getting the memo everyone else already got. Either way, we’re here for it.
Sister Says
The best part of all this is what designers actually reached for once fur was off the table, and the answer is basically everything that looks just as luxe without the ethical baggage. Think faux leather made from polyurethane blends, recycled synthetic fur pulled from ocean plastics, and plush textiles engineered to mimic the exact drape and shine real fur used to bring. Ralph Lauren leaned into leather jackets, boater hats, and ballet slippers instead, proving structure and texture can carry a look just fine without a single pelt involved. Designers are also getting genuinely creative with faux shearling and technical wovens that fake the fuzzy, oversized silhouettes people used to reach for fur to achieve, so the aesthetic isn’t disappearing, it’s just getting a materials upgrade. The CFDA is even setting up a whole library of these fur free alternatives so designers aren’t left guessing what to swap in. Basically, the vibe survives, the guilt doesn’t.
TL;DR
NYFW officially went fur free for the first time this September, and instead of feeling like a downgrade, it’s been a total glow up. Designers are swapping fur for faux leather, recycled synthetic fur, and next gen plush fabrics that somehow look even more directional. New York is just catching up to cities like London and Copenhagen here, but hey, better late than never.
