Underwear as outerwear was the loudest takeaway from London Fashion Week SS27

London Fashion Week SS27 made underwear as outerwear hard to ignore, with designers styling bras, corsets and briefs into everyday looks.

London Fashion Week SS27 has wrapped, and if you scrolled through the runway coverage, you saw the same thing again and again. Bras sat on top of shirts. Corsets were worn with nothing covering them. Satin and lace that normally stay hidden took the lead. Underwear as outerwear is not a new idea, but London pushed it well past the slip dress and lace camisole we already know.

Simone Rocha layered embellished bras over shirts and loose trousers, and sent out bright red briefs covered in oversized rosettes. Erdem let strappy bralets show through sheer ballgowns and styled bedazzled bras and panties over Oxford shirts. KNWLS built exposed bra details into corsets and lace camisoles, plus a blush pink satin pair of briefs. Yuhan Wang put lingerie under striped polo jersey and stacked briefs in lace, check cotton and jersey. Mithridate went with micro shorts, sheer hosiery and exposed suspender clips.

Sister Says

A trend matters when it shows up everywhere, and this one did. It appeared at the experimental end of the schedule and at a high street name in its runway debut. It also carried over from New York, so it was clearly not a one-city moment. The styling is what makes it feel real. Most of these looks put the lingerie over familiar pieces like shirts, trousers and tailoring, which makes the trend easy to picture in an actual wardrobe.

Sister has been watching underwear creep outward for years, and this season felt like the point where it stopped being a stunt. What London showed is that a bra or corset works best when it sits on top of something ordinary. A crisp white shirt with a beaded bra over it looks deliberate. A corset over a plain tee looks like a full outfit, and a lace bralette under a sheer layer looks polished instead of risky. The designers also made the trend feel like dressing up, with rosettes, crystals and satin doing the work, so it never looks like you forgot to finish getting dressed. If you have been wary of it, start with the layering. Pick a shirt you already trust, add one statement bra or corset on top, and keep everything else simple. Once that feels comfortable, the bolder versions start to make sense.

TL;DR

Underwear as outerwear was one of the clearest trend takeaways from London Fashion Week SS27, with bras and corsets worn over shirts, dresses and tailoring or left fully exposed. It matters because it appeared across the whole schedule, from the designer end to the commercial one, and because layering it over everyday pieces makes it easy to wear. The easiest way in is a statement bra or corset over a shirt you already own.
